start by: a) remove final drive gear and hubb) remove parking brake (direct drive)c) remove transmission (power shift) 1. Remove bearing cages (1). Keep the shims with the cages for correct assembly. If the machine has a direct drive transmission, the bevel gear will be on the right side of the pinion.2. Remove access covers on inside of tandem drive housing. Disconnect brake line on left side. Fasten a hoist to the tandem drive housing on the left side. 3. Remove cap (2) and nuts (3) from left axle housing. Use hoist and hydraulic jack to pull the left axle, axle housing and tandem drive away from the final drive housing enough to remove bevel gear and shaft. 4. Put bevel gear and shaft (4) on hydraulic jack and remove. Weight is 140 lb. (64 kg). 5. Use tooling (A) to remove the bearing cones from the bevel gear shaft. Remove bolts, locks and nuts (5) that hold the gear to the shaft. Remove the bevel gear.6. Use tooling (B) to remove the bearing cups from the cages.Install Bevel Gear And Shaft Assembly
1. Lower the temperature of the bearing cups (1) and install them in the cages.2. Install bevel gear on the shaft. Put lubricant on the washer face and threads of the nuts that hold the bevel gear. Install the bolts, locks and nuts. Tighten nuts to 230 20 lb.ft. (31.8 2.8 mkg). 3. Heat bearing cones in oil at a maximum temperature of 275°F (135°C). Install bearing cones (2) on the shaft. 4. Put the bevel gear and shaft assembly on the hydraulic jack. Install the assembly in the housing.5. Use hoist and hydraulic jack to put the left tandem housing, axle and axle housing on to the final drive housing. Install nuts.6. Install bolts and locks that hold the left axle housing to the frame. Install the access covers for the chain drive on the left side. Connect brake line.7. Install shims with the cage nearest to the bevel gear. Install the other bearing cage without shims or lockwashers on the bolts. Tighten the bolts evenly enough to remove end clearance from the shaft.
It is necessary to keep backlash between the bevel gear and pinion at all times while making the bearing adjustment.
8. Use a thickness gauge to check the clearance between the cage and final drive housing. Remove the bearing cage and install shims equal to the clearance minus .010 .002 in. (0.25 0.05 mm). Install the cage again. 9. Use a block to hold the pinion gear so it cannot turn. Install tool group (A) and check the backlash. Check at four points around the bevel gear. Correct backlash is .014 .002 in. (0.36 0.05 mm).10. If the reading is too much at the point of least backlash, remove shims from the bearing cage on the right side and install them on the left side. The preload on the bearings for the bevel gear shaft will not
