P2 ECM connector (P2-29) Digital return (P2-35) PWM outputTest Step 1. Check for Connector Damage
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Thoroughly inspect the ECM connector J2/P2. Inspect all of the other connectors. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Inspecting Electrical Connectors" for details.
Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires in the ECM connector that are associated with the circuit.
Check the ECM connector (allen head screw) for the proper torque of 6.0 N m (55 lb in).
Check the customer connector (allen head screw) for the proper torque of 2.25 0.25 N m (20 2 lb in).
Check the harness and the wiring for abrasion and for pinch points.Expected Result:The connectors and wiring are free of the following problems: damage, corrosion, abrasion and incorrect attachment. Results:
OK - The connectors and wiring are OK. Proceed to Test Step 2.
Not OK - The connectors and/or wiring need repair.Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring.STOPTest Step 2. Check for an Internal Short or Open in the Wastegate Control Solenoid
Disconnect the connector J103/P103 at the wastegate control solenoid.
Set a multimeter on the 200 Ohm scale.
Measure the resistance at the connector between J103-1 and J103-2.Expected Result:The resistance is between 5.8 and 12.7 Ohms. Results:
OK - The resistance is between 5.8 and 12.7 Ohms. Proceed to Test Step 3.
Not OK - The resistance is not between 5.8 and 12.7 Ohms. The solenoid is internally shorted or open.Repair: Replace the solenoid. Verify that the problem has been eliminated.STOPTest Step 3. Check the Voltage at the Wastegate Control Solenoid
Connect the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) to the cab service tool connector J42. StartCat ET.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position. The engine should be off.
Select the override for the wastegate on Cat ET.
Set the override for the wastegate to 100 percent.
Measure the voltage at the connector for the wastegate control solenoid between P103-1 and P103-2.Expected Result:The voltage is greater than 5.8 VDC.Results:
OK - The voltage is greater than 5.8 VDC.Repair: The voltage is reaching the solenoid. Check the mechanical operation of the solenoid.STOP
Not OK - The voltage is less than 5.8 VDC. Proceed to Test Step 4.Test Step 4. Check the Supply Voltage at the ECM
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Remove wire E798-PK from P2-29 of ECM connector P2. Install a jumper into the socket for P2-29.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position. The engine should be off.
Select the override for the wastegate on Cat ET.
Set the override for the wastegate to 100 percent.
Measure the voltage between the wire jumper in P2-29 and ground.
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Reconnect all wires and connectors.Expected Result:The voltage is greater than 5.8 VDC.Results:
OK - There is an open circuit or excessive resistance in the harness between the ECM and the solenoid.Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring.STOP
Not OK - The voltage is not greater than 5.8 VDC.Repair: Replace the ECM. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Replacing the ECM".STOP
