In most cases, the new parts are a direct replacement for the former parts. See Chart B. However, on 785 Engines 96Z1-247, it is possible that a new 8N6020 Connecting Rod will also be needed if a new piston is installed. To determine if the former 1W4800 Connecting Rod can be used with the new 7W5466 Piston Body Assembly, measure the distance from the top surface of the connecting rod to the upper rod bearing as shown in the illustration. If the measurement is 18.0 mm (.71") or less, use the 1W4800 Connecting Rod. If the measurement is more than 18.0 mm (.71"), use a new 8N6020 Connecting Rod.
Do not try to increase the clearance between the piston and connecting rod by machining the piston or connecting rod. Machining could ruin the material heat treat, create stress risers and/or ruin the balance of the connecting rod and piston. The result could be engine damage.
Measure former connecting rods before reusing with new pistons.
