Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire. To help prevent possible injury, turn the start switch off when changing fuel filters or water separator elements. Clean up fuel spills immediately.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Turn fuel supply valve (4) to the OFF position.
Disconnect harness assemblies (2) .
Disconnect hose assemblies (3) .
Place a suitable container under secondary filter element (6) in order to catch any fuel that might spill. Drain contents into a suitable container for storage or disposal.
Use Tooling (A) in order to remove secondary filter element (6) from fuel filter base (5). Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System Secondary Filter - Replace".
Remove bolts (1) and fuel filter base (5) .Installation Procedure

Position fuel filter base (5) and install bolts (1) .
Use Tooling (A) in order to install secondary filter element (6). Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System Secondary Filter - Replace".
Connect hose assemblies (3) .
Connect harness assemblies (2) .
Turn fuel supply valve (4) to the ON position.
