WASHER 0918403 - Caterpillar

Note: Install caps and plugs on all openings in order to prevent dirt or debris from entering the system. Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the removal procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will prevent dirt from entering the internal components.
Drain the hydraulic oil from the transmission system. The transmission system contains 227 L (60 US gal). Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Transmission Tank Oil - Change" for the correct procedure.
Drain the hydraulic oil from the differential and final drive. The differential and final drive contain 583 L (154 US gal). Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Differential and Final Drive Oil - Change" for the correct procedure.

Remove five bolts (1) and the washers that secure guard assembly (2) to the frame assembly. Remove guard assembly (2) from the frame assembly.

Position a suitable lifting sling around drive shaft (3). Secure the lifting sling to a hoist.
Remove four twelve point head bolts (4) in order to separate drive shaft (3) from the yoke of the transfer gears. Discard the twelve point head bolts. Use a suitable prybar (not shown) to position drive shaft (3) away from the transfer gears.

Remove four twelve point head bolts (5) that secure spider and bearing assembly (6) to drive shaft (3). Discard the twelve point head bolts. Remove spider and bearing assembly (6) from drive shaft (3).

Remove two bolts (10), the hard washers and the grommets in order to remove guard assembly (8) from sensor housing (11).
Remove the lockwire from the electrical connection of wire harness (9).
Remove bolt (7), the washer and the clip from the transfer case assembly.
Use Tool (A) (not shown) to disconnect wire harness (9) from the speed sensor.

Disconnect two hose assemblies (12) and (13) from the transmission.

Disconnect wire harness (14) at the three electrical connections.
Remove bolt (15) and the clip. Position wire harness (14) out of the way.

Disconnect two hose assemblies (16) and (17) from transmission (18).

Disconnect two hose assemblies (19) and (20) from transmission (18). Remove two clips (21).

Remove the lockwire from the electrical connection of wire harness (22).
Use Tool (A) (not shown) to disconnect wire harness (22) at the electrical connection.

Disconnect hose assembly (24) from magnetic screen (23).

Disconnect two hose assemblies (25) and (27) from differential carrier assembly (26).

Attach a suitable lifting device to transmission (18), as shown. Secure the lifting device to a hoist.
Remove 24 full nuts (28) and the washers that secure transmission (18) to differential carrier assembly (26).
Remove transmission (18), the transfer gears and the O-ring seal from differential carrier assembly (26). The weight of the transfer gears and transmission (18) is 1905 kg (4203 lb).
