Do not fill the primary fuel filter with fuel before installing. The fuel would not be filtered and could be contaminated. Contaminated fuel will cause accelerated wear to fuel system parts.
Some fuel supplies may not meet the minimum standard for fuel lubricity. Caterpillar recommends the use of fuels that meet certain minimum specifications. Refer to Special Publication, SEBU6250, "Caterpillar Machine Fluids Recommendations".
Drain water from the water separator daily, or every 10 hours. Also, drain water from the fuel tank weekly, or every 50 hours. Failure to do so could result in damage to the fuel system.

Open drain valve (4) and drain the fuel into a suitable container.
Remove sensor (3) and the wire from the bottom of the filter.
Remove primary fuel filter (1) that is on the inside left side frame rail.
Clean the filter element mounting base. Remove any part of the filter element gasket that remains on the filter element mounting base. Remove the bowl (2).
Replace the bowl (2).
Coat the seal of the new filter element with clean diesel fuel.
Install the new fuel filter by hand.Instructions for the installation of the filter are printed on the side of each Caterpillar spin-on filter. For non-Caterpillar filters, refer to the installation instructions that are provided by the supplier of the filter.
Install the sensor and the wire into the new filter.
