1. Drain radiator-capacity 38 U.S. Gal. (144 liter). 2. Remove fan guard retaining bolts (1) and (2).3. Split fan guard and remove right side first, then rotate left side of fan guard to right side and remove.4. Remove fan retaining bolts and push fan forward toward radiator and leave it in this position. 5. Remove center section of aftercooler outlet tube (3).6. Disconnect oil line (4) from fan drive to fan thermostat.7. Remove retaining bolts from water tube (5) where it connects to water pump and rotate tube assembly 180°.8. Remove fan drive oil return line and push out of way. 9. Attach tool (A) to fan drive. 10. Remove fan drive retaining bolts and remove fan drive through right side over the frameweight 100 lbs. (39 kg).Install Fan Drive
1. Check the position of the fan (1). It must be leaned against the radiator. 2. Be sure water tube (2) is free to rotate in cooler elbow. If not, remove tube and lubricate O-ring seals with liquid soap. Bend in tube must be down to allow fan drive to go in.3. Attach tool (A) to fan drive and position on engine. 4. Connect oil drain line (4).5. Connect fan thermostat oil line (3) to fan drive.6. Rotate water tube (2) into position and install on pump.7. Install center section of aftercooler tube.8. Connect fan to fan drive.9. Install fan guards (both halves must be installed from the right side).10. Fill the radiator to specified level. Later engines have a belt driven fan drive as shown.
LATER FAN DRIVEDisassemble Fan Drive
1. Loosen adapter retaining bolt approximately 1/2". 2. Attach tool (A) and pull adapter loose from shaft taper. Then remove tool (A), bolt, lockwasher, retainer and adapter. 3. Remove drive gear from opposite end. 4. Remove cover. 5. Remove turbine assembly. 6. Place turbine assembly on wood blocks and remove ring. 7. Remove cover. 8. Remove impeller assembly. 9. Attach tool (B) and pull bearing from impeller assembly.10. Remove bearing from housing.11. Remove seal and bearing from cover.Assemble Fan Drive
1. Install new bearing in impeller assembly using tool (A). 2. Install new rear bearing in housing using tool (B). Recess bearing .060 in. (1,5 mm) into housing. 3. Install new front bearing in housing using tool (C). Recess bearing .060 in. (1,5 mm) into housing. 4. Install bearing in cover with tool (D). 5. Install seal in cover using tool (E). 6. Position turbine assembly on wood blocks, install washer, and install impeller assembly. 7. Install turbine cover and retaining ring. 8. Install thrust washer in housing and install turbine assembly through housing. 9. Install thrust washer on turbine housing, and install cover assembly. 10. Install drive gear and tighten bolts to a torque of 75 10 lb. ft. (10.4 1.4 mkg). 11. Install adapter on opposite end of shaft. Tighten bolt to 150 20 lb. ft. (20,7 2,8 mkg). Tap with hammer and retighten to same torque.
