The 254-9925 Gas Spring Kit which holds the tilt steering column in place on Series E Backhoe Loaders can fail. Some failures can be attributed to the adjustment of the release mechanism for the gas spring. If the adjustment is not set properly the gas spring will not hold the steering column in the selected position. If the adjustment is not set properly the gas spring will not release the column for repositioning. This issue applies to backhoe loaders that are equipped with tilt steering columns. Solution
The following is the procedure for verifying the proper adjustment of the release mechanism for the gas spring .

In order to gain access to the steering column, remove the plastic covers. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, RENR6485, "Steering Metering Pump - Remove" steps 1 through 5. Refer to illustration 1 and illustration 2.

Disconnect the upper pin for the 254-9925 Gas Spring Kit (5) by removing the snap ring (7) and pin (6) at the upper end of the gas spring. Refer to illustration 3 and illustration 4. Leave the bottom end of the 254-9925 Gas Spring Kit connected.

Loosen the jam nut (2) that is located under the release head (1). Refer to illustration 5.

Thread the release head onto the gas spring rod until the release head makes contact. Refer to illustration 6.

Verify that there is a minimum of side to side movement of the lever in the release head. Refer to illustration 7.

Verify that there is no up to down movement of the lever in the release head. Refer to illustration 8.

Apply 4C-4030 Thread Lock Compound under the jam nut and tighten to 20 N m (14.75 lb ft). Refer to illustration 9.
Reinstall the gas spring into the steering column.

In order to adjust the pedal stop, loosen the stop nut (8). In order to allow full travel of the pedal assembly, thread the stop bolt (7) completely downward. Push the pedal downward until the pedal stops. Hold the pedal down. Run the stop bolt (7) upward until the stop bolt makes contact with the pedal. Tighten the stop nut (8). Refer to illustration 10.
Actuate the pedal and check for proper operation. If the procedure does not repair the problem, replace the gas spring.
