C-12 (2KS) Truck EnginesReference: RENR2236-00; Disassembly and Assembly; Gear Group (Front) - Remove, and Gear Group (Front) - Install; Pages 52 through 54.The diameter of the crankshaft gear where the timing sensor plate seats has been slightly increased. This increase in diameter changes the fit of the timing sensor plate to the crank gear from a press fit to a heat shrink fit. The change from press fit to heat shrink fit requires a new procedure for installation of the timing sensor plate. The design of the timing sensor plate has been updated to provide four threaded holes for the removal bolts instead of two. If the timing sensor plate on your engine has two holes for removal, the removal procedure is the same as what is in the referenced manual. If the timing sensor plate on your engine has four holes for removal, use the removal procedure that follows. The new procedures are as follows:
Removal Procedure
1. Install four 6V-8214 Bolts in the threaded holes provided.2. Turn the bolts evenly to separate the timing sensor plate from the crankshaft gear.Installation Procedure
1. Assemble the mounting ring to the timing wheel if necessary. A new timing sensor plate is pre-assembled and does not require this procedure. If using a new pre-assembled timing sensor plate, go to Step 6.2. Lay the toothed timing wheel on a flat surface with the teeth facing up.3. Position the mounting ring on the timing wheel with the dowels in their appropriate holes. The holes for the roll pins will only line up in one position so it is impossible to get the dowels in the wrong holes.4. Install the mounting ring flush against the toothed timing wheel by hand or with a light tap.5. Using a feeler gauge, check the clearance between the mating surfaces of the mounting ring and the toothed timing wheel. The clearance should not exceed 0.50 mm (.020 in) anywhere around the assembly. If this clearance is exceeded, the entire assembly must be replaced.6. Heat the assembled timing sensor plate to 210°C (410°F) for no more than 20 minutes.7. Position the hot timing sensor plate on the crankshaft gear so the tab on the inner diameter of the timing sensor plate is in the groove of the crankshaft gear.8. Push the timing sensor plate on the crankshaft gear until the back of the timing sensor plate contacts the front of the crankshaft gear. Hold the timing sensor plate on the crankshaft gear in this position until the timing sensor plate cools and is properly seated.9. Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the back of the timing sensor plate and the front of the crankshaft gear at three places around the gear. The clearance should not exceed 0.25 mm (.010 in.)Be sure to add this information to the referenced Disassembly and Assembly manual module.
