System Description
The UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) is a fully integrated line-interactive system that uses a flywheel to store mechanical energy as a rotating mass. When utility power is interrupted, the UPS converts mechanical energy stored in the flywheel to electrical energy. This energy is supplied to the external load until one of the following conditions occur:
The standby generator assumes the load
The utility power is available again
The flywheel runs out of energyOnce utility power returns, the system transfers the load back to utility power without interruption. The UPS can be used in a wide range of commercial power applications. The systems provide voltage regulation and protection from power outages. The UPS provides well-regulated power to cover critical loads, sags, surges, or outages. The nodes determine the state of the system. The input node and the output node are externally available. These nodes are used to attach the system to a power source and to the load. The filter node is used internally by the system. The DC bus is used as a power source for the field coil currents. The system mode determines if the bus is used as a power source for the flywheel or as a power source for the utility converter. The components of an MMS are housed in rugged free standing steel cabinets. The system consists of several cabinets depending on the model:
The input/output cabinet
The system cabinet
The MMU (multiple module unit) cabinets
The system network hubThe I/O cabinet is standard on all systems for use in the United States.A G and Z Series UPS may be paralleled with other like series UPS systems for increased capacity and/or redundancy. The maximum number of UPS systems that may be paralleled is seven. See Illustration 1.

Power flow from input to loadNote: Input and output breakers, MBP, and MIS may be supplied by someone other than Caterpillar. When paralleled, the UPS systems communicate with each other on a redundant network called "SysNet". The SysNet network is connected in a star configuration with a system network hub.
