Description of Change: A new 238-0296 Check Valve for the fuel filter base is now available. The new check valve is a spool valve. The former valve was a ball check valve. The new check valve prevents the fuel from siphoning back to the tank when the engine is off. Siphoning of the fuel back to the tank allows air from the tank to enter the fuel system. This may result in hard starting. For identification, the part number of the new valve is stamped on the top of the hex head of the valve. Adaptable To: The new 238-0296 Check Valve replaces the former 156-5783 Check Valve, which has been cancelled.The new 238-0296 Check Valve is adaptable to the following engine models in all applications as a direct replacement for the former 156-5783 Check Valve :
3176, 3196, C10, C11, C12, C13
3406E, 3456, C15, C16
The correct torque value for installation of the 238-0296 Check Valve is 35 3 N m (25.8 2.2 lb ft). If the fuel pressure is too high after installing the new valve, check the torque on the new valve. Too much torque may cause the new valve to stick.
