Lift cylinder rods have been known to be damaged by large rocks, logs, and other debris that fell over the back of the bulldozer blade when the blade was lifted. When the blade is lowered, these large pieces get between the cylinder rod and the back of the blade. This causes the rod to break or bend. If a rod is only bent, it will probably have a failure at some later time when the blade is pushed down.
Another less common cause of failure is a wrong quantity of shims between the trunnion and the rod eye that causes a tight fit. This causes the rod eye and trunnion to be too tight and can cause the rod to bend.
