Aftercooler (1) Exhaust manifold (2) Turbocharger (3) Coolant outlet tube (4) Coolant inlet tube (5) AftercoolerThe aftercooler is located on the left rear side of the engine at the rear opening of the plenum. The core assembly (assemblies) of the aftercooler is charged with coolant. Coolant from the water pump flows through a pipe into the aftercooler. Coolant then flows through the core assembly (assemblies). Coolant flows back out the aftercooler through the coolant outlet tube.Inlet air from the compressor side of the turbocharger flows into the aftercooler through pipes. The air then passes through the fins of the core assembly (assemblies) which lowers the temperature. The cooler air flows out of the aftercooler and into the air plenum. The air flows through the air plenum to the inlet ports in the cylinder heads.Air Shutoff (If Equipped)
The air shutoff uses a plate that rotates on a shaft in order to shut off the inlet air to the aftercooler. The engine stops because of the restricted air supply to the combustion chamber. The air shutoff only actuates when the emergency stop button or the overspeed shutdown are actuated.Valve System Components
The valve system components control the flow of the inlet air and the exhaust gases into the cylinders and out of the cylinders during engine operation.The crankshaft gear drives the camshaft gears through idlers. The camshaft must be timed to the crankshaft in order to get the correct relation between the piston and the valve movement.The camshaft has three lobes for each cylinder. Two lobes operate the valves and one operates the unit injector.As the camshaft turns, the lobes on the camshaft cause the lifters to move up and down. This movement causes the pushrods to move the rocker arms. The movement of the rocker arm causes the bridges to move up and down on the dowels in the cylinder head. The bridges open one rocker arm and simultaneously close two valves. The valves can be either inlet valves or exhaust valves. There are two inlet valves and two exhaust valves for each cylinder.Rotocoils cause the valves to turn while the engine is running. The rotation of the valves keeps the carbon deposits on the valves to a minimum which gives the valves a longer service life.Valve springs cause the valves to close when the lifters move downward.
