There have been a number of isolated incidents of the exhaust cooler (NRS) leaking internally due to thermal fatigue.Coolant loss and white smoke emissions from the engine exhaust system can be an indication of exhaust cooler (NRS) leaking internally.
If exhaust cooler (NRS) is suspected to be leaking. Follow Step 1.a through Step 1.g to investigate the exhaust cooler (NRS).
Pressure test the cooling system and check for external leaks. If necessary, repair any external leaks to the cooling system.Note: It is normal for a small amount of coolant leakage to occur from the weep hole in the water pump.
After ensuring no external leaks and there is still unidentified coolant system pressure loss, inspect the exhaust cooler (NRS) for leaks.
Remove the gas outlet tube assembly from the exhaust cooler (NRS). Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Exhaust Cooler (NRS) - Remove" for the correct removal procedure.
Repeat cooling system pressure test if the pressure in the cooling system pressure is still falling. Check the internal cores of the exhaust cooler (NRS) for wet soot or evidence that the internal core has been cleaned of any soot deposits due to coolant leakage.
If exhaust cooler (NRS) is found to be leaking, replace the exhaust cooler (NRS).
For removal and installation of the exhaust cooler (NRS), refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Exhaust Cooler (NRS) - Remove" and Disassembly and Assembly, "Exhaust Cooler (NRS) - Install" for the correct procedures.
Check the drained coolant for contamination. Ref to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant Sample (Level 1) - Obtain" and Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant (ELC) - Change" for more information.
