Information:


The engine start switch must be in the ON position and the engine must be running in order to maintain electrical functions and hydraulic functions. This procedure must be followed in order to prevent serious machine damage.

Battery disconnect switch (1) is located in the engine room. Insert the key into the disconnect switch and turn the switch to the ON position.
Make sure that the reset buttons for the circuit breakers remain depressed. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Circuit Breakers - Reset".

Hydraulic activation control lever (2) in the LOCKED position
Move hydraulic activation control lever (2) to the LOCKED position.This machine is equipped with an engine neutral start system. The system only allows the engine to start when the hydraulic activation control lever is in the LOCKED position.
Move the joysticks to the HOLD position.

Turn engine start switch key (6) to ON position (4) .The Vital Information Management System (VIMS) will perform a self test. For information on the self test, refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Vital Information Management System (VIMS) Self Test".
Read all messages and errors that are displayed on the monitor.If any fluid level is too low, add the corresponding fluid to the specified level. Add the fluid before you start the engine.
Turn engine speed dial (3) to speed position "1" (LOW IDLE).

Move ether starting aid switch (7) to the AUTOMATIC (top) position in order to enable the automatic ether starting aid. A premeasured amount of ether is automatically injected into the air inlet when the coolant temperature is below 13 °C (55 °F).
Turn engine start switch key (6) to START position (5) .
Release the engine start switch key after the engine starts.Note: If the engine does not start and if no warnings are present, perform Step 11 through Step 13 in order to manually inject the ether.

Inject starting aid (ether), only while cranking the engine.Excessive ether can cause piston and ring damage. Use starting aid (ether) for cold starting purposes only.
Move ether starting aid switch (7) to the MANUAL (bottom) position for two seconds. Return the switch to the OFF (middle) position.
Operate ether starting aid switch (7) at intervals of two seconds while you crank the engine by turning engine start switch key (6) to START position (5). Continue this procedure until the engine starts and the engine is running well.
Move ether starting aid switch (7) to the AUTOMATIC (top) position when the engine starts.To start the engine in temperatures below -18°C (0°F), the use of optional cold weather starting aids is recommended. One of the following devices may be required:
Coolant heater
Fuel heater
Extra battery capacity
Oil heaterTo start the engine in temperatures below -32 °C (-25.6 °F), consult your Caterpillar dealer. Also see Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU5898, "Cold Weather Recommendations", which is available from your Caterpillar dealer.
