MARINE ENGINE,
Information:
Above 0°C (32°F)
Be sure no one is working on or close to the machine.Fasten the seat belt.
Do not turn the disconnect switch off with the engine running.
1. Move the hydraulic and anti-travel lock lever to the lower (inoperable) position. 2. Turn the disconnect switch on. 3. Move the governor control to the low idle position. 4. Pull up and move the start switch to the right (START) position.5. Release the switch when the engine starts.Below 0°C (32°F)
1. Follow steps 1 through 3 for 0°C (32°F). 2. Pull up on the start switch and move it to START.
Use ether only while cranking the engine. Use it sparingly, excess ether can cause piston and ring damage. Ether is to be used for cold starting purposes only.If the engine does not start after 30 seconds of cranking, stop cranking. Allow two minutes for the starting motor to cool.
3. Spray starting fluid into the precleaner for one second, at two second intervals, while cranking the engine.4. Release the start switch when the engine starts.5. Continue the use of starting fluid after the engine starts, until it is running smoothly. For starting below -18°C (0°F), use of optional cold weather starting aids is recommended. A coolant heater, jacket water heater or extra battery capacity may be required. At temperatures below -23°C (-10°F), consult your Caterpillar dealer, or refer to the "Cold Weather Operation and Maintenance Guide", Form No. SEBU5338, available from your Caterpillar dealer.Starting Aid Switch Attachment
If the machine is equipped with a starting aid attachment, use the switch to inject a metered amount of starting fluid (ether) each time the switch is operated.Use the switch when starting the engine instead of spraying the ether into the precleaner.
Use ether only while cranking the engine, excessive ether can cause piston and ring damage. Ether is to be used for cold starting purposes only.
Move the switch to the right then release it every two seconds while cranking the engine. Continue use until the engine starts and is running smoothly.Starting From an External Electrical Source
Prevent sparks near the batteries. They could cause vapors to explode.Do not allow cable ends to contact each other or the machine.
Turn the disconnect switch OFF and remove the key when attaching cables.Connect the cables in parallel; POSITIVE (+) to POSITIVE (+) and NEGATIVE (-) to NEGATIVE (-).
1. Turn the disconnect switch OFF and remove the key. 2. Connect one end of a cable to the POSITIVE (+) (ungrounded) terminal of the battery of the machine to be started. Connect the other end to the POSITIVE (+) terminal of the starting source.3. Connect one end of the second cable to the NEGATIVE (-) (grounded) terminal of the power source. Connect the opposite end to the starter ground terminal of the machine to be started.4. Insert the key and turn on the disconnect switch.5. Start the engine.6. Disconnect
