Oil Flow Through The Oil Filter And Oil Cooler

(7) Oil filters.When the engine is warm, oil comes from the oil pan (6) through the bell assembly and pipe to the oil pump (5). The oil pump sends oil through a pipe to a passage in the cylinder block. The oil then goes through the oil cooler bypass valve (4) into the oil cooler (3). The oil goes out of the oil cooler through the oil filters (7). The clean oil then goes through the oil filter bypass valve (2) and into the oil manifold on the right side of the cylinder block.When the engine is cold, the cold oil with high viscosity will cause a restriction to the oil flow through the oil cooler (3) and the oil filters (7). This restriction causes an oil pressure difference in the bypass valves. This will cause the bypass valves (2) and (4) to open. When the bypass valves are open, oil flows directly through passages in the valve body to the oil manifold.When the oil is warm, the pressure difference at the bypass valves decreases. This will cause the bypass valves to close. Normal oil flow will resume through the oil cooler (3) and the oil filters (7) .The bypass valves will also open when there is a restriction in the oil cooler or the oil filter. This prevents a restricted oil filter or a restricted oil cooler from stopping the lubrication of the engine.There is also a bypass valve in the engine oil pump (5). This bypass valve controls the pressure of the oil from the oil pump. The capacity of the oil pump exceeds the amount of oil that is needed to lubricate the system. The oil pressure will increase because of the excessive oil. This will cause the bypass valve to open. This will allow the oil that is not needed to go back to the inlet oil passage of the oil pump.Oil Flow In The 3408C Engine
