CLUTCH DESIGNATION (Transmission in Vertical Position with Case Removed)The No. 1 clutch rotates with No. 1 carrier and is referred to as a rotating clutch. All the other clutches are stationary in the transmission housing.When the speed selector lever is in the NEUTRAL position and the engine is running, the No. 4 clutch is filled with pressure oil.First Speed Forward
The No. 1 clutch and No. 5 clutch are engaged. This holds the No. 5 clutch ring gear stationary and locks the No. 1 clutch gear to the No. 1 carrier.As the No. 1 clutch is engaged, input gear, No. 1 carrier, No. 1 clutch gear and intermediate sun gear turn as a unit. The intermediate sun gear meshes with the intermediate planet gears which in turn mesh with the No. 4 planet gears which turn on the No. 4 sun gear, causing No. 2 carrier to rotate. As the No. 5 clutch ring gear is held stationary, No. 5 outer planet gears walk around the ring gear, driving the No. 5 inner planet gears which in turn drive the No. 5 sun gear. The No. 5 sun gear is splined to the output shaft and, therefore, the turning effort is applied to the shaft.

POWER FLOW-SECOND SPEED FORWARD (No. 1 and No. 3 clutches engaged)As the No. 1 clutch is engaged, the input gear, No. 1 carrier, No. 1 clutch gear and intermediate sun gear turn as a unit. Intermediate sun gear meshes with the intermediate planet gears which in turn mesh with the No. 4 planet gears. No. 2 carrier is held stationary by the No. 3 clutch and ring gear. This causes No. 4 planet gears to turn No. 4 sun gear, thereby transmitting turning effort directly to the output shaft with no planetary action.Third Speed Forward
POWER FLOW-THIRD SPEED FORWARD (No. 1 and No. 4 clutches engaged)Input gear, No. 1 carrier, No. 1 clutch gear and intermediate sun gear turn as a unit as in the other two forward speeds. This transmits power to the intermediate planet gears which turn the No. 4 planet gears. As the No. 4 clutch is engaged, the No. 4 clutch ring gear is held stationary. This causes the No. 4 planet gears to walk around the ring gear forcing the No. 2 carrier to turn. No. 4 planet gears transmit power to the No. 4 sun gear which imparts turning effort to the output shaft.Second Speed Reverse
Power from the transfer drive input gear is transmitted through the input gear to the No. 1 carrier. Since the No. 2 clutch is engaged the No. 2 outer planet gears walk around the No. 2 clutch ring gear. The No. 2 outer planet gears turn No. 2 inner planet gears which mesh with No. 2 sun gear.
