Location of possible high spot on 398-0972 Sprocket Segment
The mounting surface of the 398-0972 Sprocket Segment may have a high spot between one or both of the end bolt holes. This high spot can prevent proper abutment of the segment to the final drive hub.Solution
Caterpillar is aware of this problem, and recommending to follow the below inspection method to identify a good part or suspect part.Suspect parts should be quarantined for future measurement and disposition via a Parts Stock Service Letter. Do not scrap or return the segment to Caterpillar Parts System at this time.

Good part sets flush and has no gaps. Straightedge does not rock
A good part will allow a straightedge to set flush across the end bolt holes. The straightedge will not rock back and forth as shown in Illustration 2.

Suspect part does not set flush and has gaps. Straightedge will rock
A suspect part will NOT allow a straightedge to set flush on across the end bolt holes. The straightedge will rock back and forth on the high spot as shown in Illustration 3.If needed, the D6H/R/T Heavy-Duty segment, 173-0946 Sprocket Segment, can be used in place of the 398-0972 Sprocket Segment. The 173-0946 Sprocket Segment is more expensive but will have longer wear life.
