Put bearings (7) and pinion (5) in position in the carrier.2. Install the retainer with enough shims (9) so there is end play that can be measured. Then add or remove shims (9) to give .001 to .003 in. (0.03 to 0.08 mm) end play for pinion (5). Turn the pinion slowly while making the adjustment.3. Using no shims (3), tighten the bolts for retainer (2) evenly to a torque of 30 lb. ft. (4.1 mkg). Then turn the differential to put bearings (6) in position.4. Loosen the bolts for retainer (2). Tighten the bolts with fingers. Turn the differential and measure the amount of free movement (backlash) between pinion (5) and bevel gear (4). The correct backlash is ... .014 .005 in.(0.36 0.13 mm) If an adjustment of the backlash is needed, remove the lock and turn ring (8) as needed. Then do Steps 3 and 4 again.5. Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between retainer (2) and the cover.6. Remove retainer (2).7. Install enough shims (3) so they are .001 .001 in.
