1. Remove cotter pin (1) and nut. (2).2. Disconnect tie rod end (3) from the steering knuckle.
Typical Axle Housing3. Remove two bolts and dust shield (4).4. Remove axle shaft (5). 5. Remove the four bolts from upper king pin cap (6). Use a 7/16-14 forcing screw to remove the cap.6. Remove four bolts from lower king pin cap (9). Use a 7/16"-14 forcing screw to remove the cap.7. Remove shims and thrust washer (8) from lower king pin cap (9).8. Remove upper king pin cap (6) and shims. (upper cap (6) does not use a thrust washer). Keep each shim pack together and correctly identified for reassembly.9. Use two people to remove knuckle (7) from the axle housing trunnion socket. The weight of knuckle (7) is 50 kg (110 lb) The knuckle can be tipped to clear the socket on the axle housing. 10. Pressing king pin bronze bushing (10) from axle housing (11) upper trunnion socket. The following steps are for installation of the steering knuckle. 11. Use a suitable driver to install king pin bushing (10). Install the bushing flush with the outside surface of the upper trunnion socket kin pin boss on axle housing (11).12. Check the fit of upper king pin cap (6) and lower king pin cap (9) in new bushing (10). If necessary, ream bushing (10) to the correct size.13. Lubricate the king pin bushing bore with grease.14. Install steering knuckle (7) over axle housing (11) trunnion socket. 15. Install upper king pin cap (6) with the original shim pack. It may be necessary to force the cap into bushing (10) by tightening the four king pin bolts. Tighten the four bolts in an "X" pattern, keeping the king pin cap square with the bore of bushing (11). Tighten the four bolts to a torque of 780 to 1020 N m (575 to 750 lb ft). Apply grease to the grooved face of the thrust washer prior to installation on lower king pin cap (9).16. Install lower king pin cap (9) with original shim pack (6). The tangs of thrust washer (8) must face the trunnion socket. Tighten the four bolts to a torque of 780 to 1020 N m (575 to 750 lb ft).
Make sure that the thrust washer tangs engage the slots in the trunnion socket boss before final tightening of the lower king pin caps bolts.
The steering knuckle must be adjusted at this time. Use the adjustment procedure that follows:
