Introduction
A comparison can be made between the measurements of a worn part and the specifications of a new part to find the amount of wear. A part that is worn can be safe to use if an estimate of the remainder of its service life is good. If a short service life is expected, replace the part.Service Brake Check
The service brake is a wet-disc brake. Although plate and lining wear is minimal, it may become necessary to renew the inner plates with the lining.A simple method of checking the plate and lining wear without disassembling the axle is to check the brake fluid level in the brake fluid reservoirs. Proceed as follows for this check:1. Make sure there is proper air pressure in the braking system.2. Mark the fluid level in the reservoirs when the brakes are disengaged.3. Lock the brakes with the toggle switch at the left armrest.4. Measure the difference in the brake fluid level. The level of the brake fluid in the reservoir should not fall more than 4.5 mm (.18 in.) when the brake is applied fully.5. If the brake fluid drops more than the correct specification, or if the braking action is reduced and noises occur, the plates must be inspected.Parking Brake Adjustment
Block the machine to prevent movement before releasing the brakes. The machine can roll free if it is not blocked. Personal injury or death could result.
This adjustment can only be done if the brake lining thickness is at least 2 mm (.08 in.). If the thickness does not meet this specification, replace the brake shoes. When the brake linings wear down, the clearance between brake lining and brake drum increases. The stroke of the brake cylinder also increases. The brake cylinder stroke must not exceed 68 mm (2.68 in) between the brake released and the brake engaged position. If the braking power is insufficient, do the following adjustment.
Parking Brake
(1) Brake lever. (2) Eccentric bolt.1. Release the parking brake.2. Remove pin holding lever (1) to eccentric bolt (2).3. Remove the lever from the splined shaft of bolt (2). Adjust the position of lever to get the correct brake cylinder stroke, then reinstall the lever to the shaft.4. Install the pin to lever (1).
