EUI Engine
The operation of the engine is controlled by the Engine ECM. Some Electronic Unit Injection (EUI) engines utilize a Common Engine Interface (CEI). In CEI applications, the EMCP 4 may send the engine start and the engine stop information across the CAN data link.Note: For a CEI application, the cooldown timer that is in the ECMP 4 should be set to zero. The Engine ECM controls the engine speed and also enables the fuel injection for the engines. The fuel enable input and the speed input can be configured by using the service tool. The fuel enable input to the ECM can be switched to battery negative, or the input can be transmitted over the primary CAN data link. The desired engine speed is derived from one of the two following inputs:
Input from a converter. The converter converts the analog speed signal of a speed potentiometer into a pulse width modulated signal for delivery over the primary CAN data link.
The ECM uses feedback from the engine speed sensors that are mounted on the engine to control the engine speedThere are primary and secondary throttle inputs. The throttle inputs can be a pulse width modulated signal or the speed inputs can be transmitted over the primary CAN data link.Note: Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET) is used to configure the throttle inputs as either primary or as secondary. The Engine ECM will acknowledge the failure, generate a diagnostic, and respond to the secondary input if the primary throttle input fails. The engine will default to the idle speed setting if the primary throttle input fails and the secondary input is disabled. The EMCP 4 receives specific information that is used in order to monitor the system for events.Note: The EMCP 4 does not display the parameter name for unsupported parameters. The following information is shown on the display screen of the EMCP 4 if the information is supported by the Engine ECM:
Engine Oil Pressure
Engine Coolant Temperature
Left Exhaust Manifold Temperature
Right Exhaust Manifold Temperature

Rate of Fuel Note: Only the values that are supported by other modules, and that are broadcast on one of the CAN data links will be displayed. The EMCP 4 displays the diagnostic trouble codes from the ECM as a convenience to the operator.Reference: For information on the management of diagnostic trouble codes by the EMCP 4 and the ECM, refer to Troubleshooting, "Diagnostic Trouble Code List". Reference: For EMCP 4 settings that are specific to EUI engine applications, refer to the setpoint tables in Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (Generator Set) - Configure".
