Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Apply clean engine oil to the pistons, the piston rings, and the cylinder liners.
Use Tooling (A) to position the rod bearing journal that is being serviced in the bottom center position. Note: The number on the bearing cap must be on the same side as the connecting rod. The number on the bearing cap must match the number on the connecting rod.

Use Tooling (B) and a soft hammer to install piston (3) and the connecting rod in the cylinder liner.

The connecting rod and the piston must be installed in the engine with surface (X) toward the crankshaft main bearing journal. Surface (Y) must be toward the connecting rod. Note: Surface (X) is thicker than surface (Y).

Thoroughly lubricate the threads on bolts (1) with clean engine oil. Install bolts (1) in order to attach bearing cap (2) to the connecting rod. The number on the side of the bearing cap (2) is on the same side as the number on the connecting rod. Note: The number on the bearing cap must be on the same side as the connecting rod. The number on the bearing cap must match the number on the connecting rod.
Refer to Illustration 4 for the tightening sequence. Tighten bolts (1A) and (1C) to a torque of 70 4 N m (52 3 lb ft). Tighten bolts (1B) and (1D) to a torque of 70 4 N m (52 3 lb ft). Additionally tighten bolts (1B) and (1D) 60 5 degrees. Tighten bolts (1A) and (1C) 70 4 N m (52 3 lb ft). Additionally tighten bolts (1A) and (1C) 60 5 degrees. End By:
Install the engine oil pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Oil Pump - Install".
Install the cylinder head. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Cylinder Head - Install".
