Personal injury or death can result from making any tests or adjustments on the brake system if brake air and oil pressure is not released first.Sudden movement of the machine or release of oil under pressure can cause injury to persons on or near the machine. To prevent possible injury, perform the procedure that follows before testing and adjusting the parking brake system.
1. Move the machine to a smooth horizontal location. Move away from working machines and personnel. Lower the bucket to the ground. Stop the engine.2. Permit only one operator on the machine. Keep all other personnel either away from the machine or in view of the operator.3. Engage the parking brake. Put blocks in front of and behind the wheels.4. Install the steering frame lock link so the machine can not turn.5. Stop the engine.6. Push on either brake pedal many times until there is no more brake air pressure. When the air pressure has been removed from the air circuit, there will be no pressure in the brake hydraulic circuit.Adjustment Procedure
1. Start the engine and allow the air pressure increase to operating range.2. Move the parking brake control knob to the disengaged position. Stop the engine.3. Remove cotter (4) and pin (6). Remove lever (7) from its shaft.4. Turn starwheel (10) to obtain a clearance dimension of 0.5 mm (.02 in) snug fit between shoes (9) and drum (8).5. Loosen nut (2) and turn rod end (3) to obtain dimension (A). Dimension (A) equals ... 102 mm (4.0 in).6. Install lever (7), pin (6), and cotter (4).7. Use nut (5) to turn rod (1) until free movement between rod end (3) and lever (7) is removed.8. Tighten nut (2).9. Move the parking brake control knob to the engaged position, and check the stroke [distance (B)]. Complete Steps 1 through 8 again if distance (B) is greater than ... 19.0 mm (.75 in).10. The parking brake is adjusted correctly if the machine can not be moved in second speed REVERSE when the engine is slowly accelerated to full power.11. If the brakes do not hold the machine in Step 10, repeat Steps 1 through 9. If new brake shoes were installed, engage the secondary brake to make three successive stops from third speed FORWARD at maximum speed. Allow the brakes to cool to ambient temperature after the third stop, and repeat Steps 1 through 9.
