When the brake pedal is fully released, the components for the master brake cylinder are held by spring (4) in the position shown in Illustration 2.When the brake pedal is pressed, push rod (9) offsets piston (7). Rod (6) moves into contact with valve (3) and the rod pushes the valve against the valve seat. Oil from the brake reservoir is blocked at port (2). The rod then remains stationary in order to hold the valve closed as the piston moves to the left. At the same time, oil is displaced from cavity (8) and pressure is transmitted from outlet port (5) to the brake cylinder (boost).When the brake pedal is released, the force of spring (4) offsets piston (7) to the right against the stop. Pressure in the line to the brake cylinder (boost) is relieved as oil is drawn back into port (5) .Valve (3) is opened by spring force as rod (6) is moved to the right by the piston. This allows the master brake cylinder to be topped up with oil from the brake reservoir through port (2).
