This CID 0296 FMI 14 diagnostic code is associated with the communication between the Machine ECM and the Transmission/Chassis ECM. The communication is conducted on the Cat Data Link circuit or the communication that is conducted over the SAE J1939 Data Link circuit.The FMI 14 means that the Machine ECM is communicating with the Transmission/Chassis ECM on the involved data link circuit. However, the Machine ECM is not receiving expected operating parameter information.A "companion" diagnostic code is activated when the CID 0296 FMI 14 diagnostic code is activated by the Machine ECM. The "companion" diagnostic code indicates the data link that is involved. The "companion" diagnostic code that has been activated will be either of the following diagnostic codes:CID 0247 FMI 14 - SAE J1939 Data LinkCID 0248 FMI 14 - Cat Data LinkDetermine the "companion" code that is activated simultaneously with the CID 0296 FMI 14 diagnostic code to determine which data link is involved.Note: The "companion" code of the data link is cleared when the CID 0296 FMI 14 diagnostic code is cleared. The possible causes of the diagnostic code are listed below:
The software that is installed on the Transmission/Chassis ECM is incorrect.
The software that is installed on the Machine ECM is incorrect.
A new ECM that is installed is not the correct part.Note: Ensure that the CID 0296 FMI 14 diagnostic code is active before performing this procedure.Test Step 1. DETERMINE THE COMPANION CODE OF THE DATA LINK THAT IS ACTIVENote: Both of the "companion" codes of the data link are active, if an incorrect software or an incorrect control module causes the problem.
