Move direction selector (2) to the NEUTRAL position.
Engage parking brake (1) .
Turn engine start switch (3) to the ON position. The monitoring system performs an automatic self test. The action alarm sounds and all of the indicator lights come on briefly. The indicator light for the parking brake will stay on until the parking brake is released. If the attachment controls are locked out the indicator light for the hydraulic lockout control will stay on until the controls are unlocked. The indicator light for the auto kickdown will stay on until the function is unselected. If the system detects a fault, check the electrical system. Make all of the necessary repairs before you start the engine.
Before the engine is started, check for the presence of bystanders or maintenance personnel. Ensure that all personnel are clear of the machine. Briefly sound forward horn (4) before you start the engine.
Turn engine start switch (3) to the START position. Crank the engine. Release the key when the engine starts.
Do not crank the engine for more than 30 seconds. Allow the starter to cool for two minutes before cranking again. Turbocharger damage can result if the engine rpm is not kept low until the oil gauge display verifies that the oil pressure is sufficient.

Ether Starting Aid - If the temperature of the coolant is below 0 °C (32 °F) the engine ECM will automatically inject ether during engine cranking and during engine warm-up. The duration and the amount of ether increases with colder temperatures at start-up. Indicator (5) indicates that the relay for the ether aid is being activated. The system is automatic. Manual operation of ether starting system is not permitted. Do not introduce any additional ether into the inlet air system. The additional ether may damage the engine. For starting below -18°C (0°F), the use of the cold weather starting aids is recommended. A fuel heater, a jacket water heater, and extra battery capacity may be required. At temperatures below -23°C (-10°F), consult your Caterpillar dealer. For information on starting the engine in cold weather, refer to the Special Publication, SEBU5898, "Cold Weather Recommendations for all Caterpillar Machines".
