Alternator Belts

Open the access door on the left side of the machine.Note: Even if only one belt is worn or damaged, replace the belts in sets.

(A) New belt
(B) Worn belt
Inspect the condition of the serpentine belt. Over time the belt ribs will lose material (C). The space between the ribs will increase (D). The loss of material will cause the pulley sheave to contact the belt valley. This will lead to belt slippage and accelerated wear (E). Replace the belt if the belt is worn or frayed.
Illustration 3 g00718771
Inspect the condition of the fan and the alternator belts. The belts should deflect 14 to 20 mm (.56 to .81 inch) under 400 44 N (90 10 lb) of force after more than 30 minutes of operation at rated speed. If the condition of the belts and the tension of the belts are acceptable, proceed to "Air Conditioner Belt". If the alternator belt requires adjustment or replacement, proceed to Step 4.
Remove the pan for the engine oil filter.
Illustration 4 g00718793
Loosen the adjusting locknut.
Illustration 5 g00718801
Turn the adjusting nut until the correct belt tension is reached. To achieve the correct belt adjustment, move the alternator inward or move the alternator outward, as required.
Tighten the adjusting locknut.Note: Use the same procedure in order to replace the belts. The fan drive belts must be removed in order to change the alternator belts. Refer to the Service Manual for additional information.
If new belts are installed, check the belt adjustment after engine operation of 30 minutes. The deflection of a new alternator belt with 30 minutes of operation at rated speed should be 534 22 N (120 5 lb).
Install the pan for the engine oil filter.
Close the access door.Air Conditioner Belt
Stop the engine.

Open the access door on the right side of the machine.
Illustration 7 g00743155
Inspect the condition of the air conditioner belt. Use a 144-0235 Belt Tension Gauge to check the adjustment of the air conditioner belt. The deflection of an air conditioner belt with more than 30 minutes of operation at rated speed should be 400 44 N (90 10 lb). If the air conditioner belt needs removal and replacement proceed with Step 4.

Note: The fan drive belts must be removed in order to change the air conditioner belt. Refer to the Service Manual for additional information.
Loosen the mounting bolt (1).
Loosen two compressor mounting bolts (2). One of the compressor mounting bolts (2) is not shown. The bolt is located on the other side of the bracket.
Loosen the jam nut (3) and rotate the compressor downward.
Remove belt (4) from the pulley on the compressor (5).
Install the new belt on the pulley on the compressor.
Rotate the compressor upward until the tension on the belt is 534 22 N (120 5 lb). Tighten the jam nut (3) to a torque 70 10 N m (52 7 lb ft).Note: Use a 144-0235 Belt Tension Gauge.
