Caterpillar product that is shipped (sent) overseas is equipped with protective covers to prevent corrossion caused by salt water. Generally, these covers are used in openings, ports or any area that can let corrosive material, like dirt or salt water, get into the product. Before delivery to a user or assembly, dealers must remove these protective covers.
If the covers are not removed, they can cause difficult operation of the product. For example, tape is used at the bottom of the breather tube on 910 Loaders to keep salt water out of the engine during shipment. If the tape is not removed before the loader is put into operation, the result can be a lack of power caused by a restriction of the engine breather.
