Information:
You must read and understand the warnings and instructions contained in the Safety section of this manual before performing any operation or maintenance procedures.Cooling System Coolant
Change Coolant/Clean System
Do not change the coolant until you read and understand the material in the Cooling System Specifications section.
Drain the coolant earlier than the recommended interval whenever the coolant is dirty or foaming is observed. The radiator cap is located at the rear of the machine. 1. Open the access cover and remove the radiator cap slowly to relieve pressure. 2. Open the radiator grill.3. Open the drain valve and allow the coolant to drain.4. Close the drain valve. Fill the system with clean water and a 6 to 10% concentration of cooling system cleaner.5. Start and run the engine for 90 minutes. Stop the engine and drain the cleaning solution.6. Flush the system with water, with the engine stopped, until the draining water is clear.7. Close the drain valve.8. Add the coolant solution. See "Cooling System Specifications" and "Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities". Do not add supplemental coolant additive or change element at this time unless you are not using Caterpillar Antifreeze which contains additive.9. Start the engine and operate it with the radiator cap off until the thermostat opens and the level stabilizes.10. Close the radiator grill. 11. Maintain the coolant level in the sight gauge.12. Install the cap.13. Stop the engine.Clean Outside of Radiator Fins
Compressed air is preferred, but high pressure water or steam can be used to remove dust, leaves and general debris from radiator fins.Cooling System Coolant (Extended Life Coolant)
Add Extender
This procedure only pertains to machines using Extended Life Coolant.Extender should only be added to ELC after 6000 service hours or four years, whichever comes first. Add Extender to the coolant to obtain 2.2 0.3% extended concentration.1. Stop the engine and allow the engine to cool.2. Remove the radiator cap slowly to relieve pressure.3. The cooling system should be treated with .97 L (1 qt) of Extender for every 46 L (12 US gal) of cooling system capacity.4. Install the radiator cap.For more information about Extender, refer to the Cooling System Specifications ELC Extender topic in this manual.
