Introduction
The frame assemblies, part of the center and rear axle suspension frame groups, may crack. This Special Instruction gives a procedure for repairing and reinforcing the 7U-1598 and 7U-1599 Frame Assemblies.Do not perform any procedure outlined in this publication, or order any parts, until you read and understand the information contained in this Special Instruction.Necessary Parts
* Two fabricated plates for each 7U-1598 Center Frame Assembly being repaired or reinforced.* Two fabricated plates for each 7U-1599 Rear Frame Assembly being repaired or reinforced.Fabricating The Plates For Reinforcing The Frame Assemblies
Dimensions for fabricated plate (1) to be used on 7U-1598 Frame Assemblies (Center). 1. Fabricate two reinforcing plates (1) for each center frame assembly. Fabricate the reinforcing plates (1) from mild steel that is 10.0 mm (.39 in) thick.
Dimensions for fabricated plate (2) to be used on 7U-1599 Frame Assemblies (Rear). 2. Fabricate two reinforcing plates (2) for each rear frame assembly. Fabricate the reinforcing plates (2) from mild steel that is 10.0 mm (.39 in) thick.Frame Assembly Repair
Typical crack location (A) and repair. Dimension (B) 16.0 2.0 mm (.63 .08 in).1. Cracks in the 7U-1598 and 7U-1599 Frame Assemblies usually occur at the area shown in the illustration. Gouge out any cracks that are present as shown. Repair weld the crack as shown and grind the area flush.Fabricated Plate Installation
Fabricated plate location. Center frame assembly is shown. Fabricated Plate (1). Dimension (A) 40.0 2.0 mm (1.57 .079 in), Dimension (B) 21.0 2.0 mm (.83 .079 in).1. Place fabricated plates (1) in position as shown in the illustration. A center frame assembly is shown. The dimensions are the same for reinforcing a rear frame using fabricated plate (2).To make sure the fabricated plate fits flush with the frame assembly, it may be necessary to heat and bend the areas that do not fit flush. A typical example would be Location (X).2. Weld the fabricated plate to the frame assembly using an 8.0 mm (.31 in) fillet weld all around at Location (Y).
