Remove the priority valve. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Priority Valve - Remove".
Remove the front idler gears. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Idler Gears (Front) - Remove".
Remove the crankshaft front seal. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankshaft Front Seal and Wear Sleeve - Remove".
Remove the fuel transfer pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fuel Transfer Pump - Remove".
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Remove the oil suction tube.
Remove the oil supply tube that is between the prelube pump and the oil distribution tee.
Loosen all the bolts for the engine oil pan so that there is a 3.17 mm (0.125 inch) clearance between the following components: cylinder block, front housing, rear housing and engine oil pan. Be careful not to damage the oil pan gasket.
Remove the bolts that hold the engine oil pan to the bottom of the front housing.

If necessary, remove O-ring seals (2), (4), and (5) from the front housing.Note: Sleeve (1) carries filtered oil to the crankshaft. Therefore, cleanliness is important during this procedure.
If necessary, remove sleeve (1). Remove the O-ring seals from the sleeve.
Remove bolts (7) from the inside of the front housing.
Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to the top of front housing (9). The weight of front housing (9) is approximately 268 kg (590 lb).Note: Tooling (B) can be used to help remove the front housing.
Remove four bolts (3) and install Tooling (B). Remove remaining bolts (3) that hold front housing (9) in place. Remove bolts (8). Carefully slide front housing (9) off Tooling (B). Remove front housing (9) .
Remove gasket (6) from the front of the cylinder block.
