Perform an output pressure check on the Stanadyne fuel lift pump to verify proper operation.
Output pressure may exceed expected pressure. Verify output pressure with a 500kPA pressure gauge before using a lower rating pressure gauge.
1. Measure the output pressure using a 500kPa pressure gauge on the output port of the fuel lift pump. If the output pressure is below 100kPa, measure the ouput pressure using a 0-100kPa pressure gauge. Record the pressure reading. Document the pressure reading and the lift pump serial number on the service claim. The lift pump serial number can be found on the side of the electric motor and will have a format similar to 07J27.
- If the output pressure reading is between 40-70kPa, no further action is required. Return the machine to service.
- If the ouptut pressure reading is above 70kPa, proceed to Step 2.
2. If the output pressure is above 70kPa, replace the lift pump with a new 232-5877 pump. Ensure the date code begins with 09--- or higher, indicating the pump was built in 2009 or later.
3. Remove the fuel injection pump for replacement of the main shaft seal by a local Denso Dealer. Re-install the fuel injection pump after main shaft seal has been replaced.
4. Change the engine oil and engine oil filter. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual as needed.
5. Verify proper operation and check for leaks. Rectify leaks as required.
6. Return the machine to service.

An additional 3.0 hours labor will be allowed for replacement of the fuel lift pump, engine oil, and engine oil filter resulting from excessive lift pump output pressure. Up to $750 US. will be allowed for replacement of the main shaft seal on the fuel injection pump by a local Denso dealer.
Document the pressure reading and the lift pump serial number on the service claim.

The fuel lift pump needs to be inspected and possibly replaced on the products listed below. The existing fuel lift pump can create excessive fuel pressure, causing fuel to leak into the oil and the engine to over speed, which may create a risk of personal injury or death. You will not be charged for the service performed.
Contact your local Caterpillar dealer immediately to schedule this service. The dealer will advise you of the time required to complete this service.
Please refer the dealer to their Service Letter dated 27Oct2009 when scheduling this service.
