2. Remove ten screws (1). 3. Lift instrument panel (2) off the console and lay aside. Panel cannot be completely removed because of the wiring harness.4. Disconnect four hose assemblies (3). Cap or plug immediately.5. Remove four bolts (4) (not shown), nuts and washers.6. Remove hand metering unit (5) with steering column (6), hand metering bracket and steering wheel as a unit.7. If necessary, remove the hand metering bracket, steering column and steering wheel from the hand metering unit. For installation of the hand metering unit, reverse the removal steps.Disassemble Hand Metering Unit (HMU)
Start By:Remove hand metering unit. 1. Remove bolts (1). Remove cap (2). Remove the O-ring seal from the cap. 2. Remove gerotor assembly (3) and spacer (4) from the pump body. Remove the ring seal from the gerotor assembly. 3. Remove drive (5). Remove spacer (6) from the pump body. 4. Remove O-ring seal (7).5. Remove sleeve (8) from the pump body. 6. Remove pin (11) Remove spool (9) from sleeve (8). Remove six springs (10) from spool (9). 7. Remove bearing races (12) and (13) from the pump body. 8. Turn the pump body over. Remove spiral lock ring (14). Remove bushing (15). 9. Remove seals (16) from bushing (15). 10. Remove plug (17), seat (19), ball (21) and retainer (22) from the pump body. Remove O-ring seals (18) and (20) from the seat.Assemble Hand Metering Unit (HMU)
All (HMU) components must be cleaned and inspected before assembly. If any components are worn beyond recommended limits they must be replaced. Lubricate all moving parts with clean oil during assembly. Assemble (HMU) with all new seals. 1. Install O-rings seals (2) and (4) on seat (3). Install retainer (6), ball (5), seat (3) and plug (1) in hmu body (7). Tighten the plug to a torque of 11 N m (8 lb ft). Make sure the plug is even with or below the hmu body surface after it is tightened. 2. Install seals (8) in the bushing. 3. Install O-ring seal (10) in pump body (11). Put bushing (9) in position in HMU body (11) Install the spiral lockring that holds it. 4. Turn the HMU body over. Install O-ring seal (14) on the HMU body.5. Install bearing races (12) and bearing (13) in the HMU body. 6. Install six springs (17) in spool (15) with three springs on each side. Make sure the curves of the springs are in contact and in the center of the spool. The notched side of the spring ends must be towards the sleeve.7. Install sleeve (16) over spool (15) so the notch (slot) in the sleeve engages with the ends of springs (17). Install pins (18) in the sleeve and spool. 8. Install sleeve assembly (19) in the HMU body. 9. Put spacer (21) in position on the HMU body.10. Install drive (20) in the HMU body. Make sure the notch (slot) in the drive is engaged with pin (18) that holds the sleeve and spool together. 11. Install
