PRIORITY - Product Improvement Program For Reworking The Lower Frame Top Ring

Dear Caterpillar Product Owner:
Cracks can appear in the top ring of the frame on the products listed below. The weld toe needs to be reworked. You will not be charged for the service performed.
Contact your local Caterpillar dealer immediately to schedule this service. The dealer will advise you of the time required to complete this service.
Please refer the dealer to their Service Letter dated 15Nov2006 when scheduling this service.

Rework Procedure
1. Position machine on flat ground.
Remove lower frame steps and tool boxes as needed for convenient access to swing ring. A lifting device could be required for handling steps/boxes.
2. Remove 7 112-3929 Bolts(image 1.2.1) and grind weld toe with small stone grinding cone (reference dimensions shown on image 1.2.2) to get smooth connecting radius (image 1.2.2). If "black spots" appear in the weld, grind until they disappear (image 1.2.3). Image 1.2.4 shows a good rework.

3. Use new 112-3929 Bolts and tighten to a torque of 900 +/- 100 Nm.
4. Repeat operations 2 and 3 all around ring (6 times).
5. Inspect ring and perform die penetrant test to identify possible cracks.

Repaint grinded area and re-install steps and tool boxes on lower frame.
