The 256-5984 Rotocoil As can sustain excessive wear. Normal valve train wear may result in a slightly collapsed rotocoil, which is acceptable. However, if the collapse exceeds 2 mm (0.079inch), this can result in a premature failure of the rotocoil.

Inspect the top of the cylinder head and oil drain passages of the cylinder head for random pieces of the rotocoil assembly.If a rotocoil is discovered in this condition, excessive stresses may have been placed on adjacent valve train components, which could eventually fail. Replace any cylinder head assembly that contains a failed valve rotocoil.Solution
Measure the rotocoil from the outer edge to the inner plate. If the measurement is larger than 2 mm (0.079inch), replace the rotocoil.

Obtain all measurements when the valves are fully closed. Measure the depth of the internal body in three points around the perimeter.Note: When replacing rotocoils, inspect the springs determine re-use criteria based on Reuse And Salvage Guidelines, SEBF9193-07.Note: Replace valve stem seals only if springs require replacement.Note: Refer to Service Magazine, SEPD1542 and Engine News, SEBD9834 for a new rotocoil part number. Refer to Service Magazine, SEPD1539 and Engine News, SEBD9832 for the new valve lash setting.
