Assembly for the Field Coil Driver (2) Heat Shrink and Shroud (3) Field Coil Driver BoardThe Field Coil Driver Board (3) is located at the top right of the cabinet. The assembly for the Field Coil Driver consists of the following components: Field Coil Driver Board, heat sink and insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs).The IGBTs for the field coil are connected to the DC bus. The field coils are used to generate magnetic fields in the flywheel. The field coils provide a lifting force on the rotor in order to prolong bearing life. Also, the field coils generate an electromotive force that enables the flywheel to spin during start-up. The field coils generate an electromotive force during discharge that provides energy to the bus.Removal Procedure
Refer to Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, RENR9988, "Internal Component Preremoval Steps (Flywheel Cabinet)" in order to shut down the system and gain access to internal components.
Electrostatic discharge can damage integrated circuits or semiconductors if you touch bus connector pins. When not in use, keep the module in its static-shield bag. Follow these guidelines when you handle any module:Touch a grounded object to discharge static potential.Wear an approved wrist-strap grounding device.Do not touch the bus connector or connector pins.Do not touch circuit components inside the module. If available, use a static-safe work station.

Disconnect all connectors. Refer to Illustration 3. Verify each label for each connector for subsequent installation.
Loosen the left bolt that holds the assembly (3) to the top of the cabinet for the flywheel.
Loosen the right bolt that holds the assembly (3) to the top of the cabinet for the flywheel.
Remove the assembly (3) off the loosened bolts in order to remove the assembly (3) from the cabinet.Installation Procedure

Position the assembly (3) under the two loosened bolts at the top of the cabinet for the flywheel.
Install the assembly (3) on the mounting bolts.
Tighten the left bolt that holds the assembly (3) to the top of the cabinet for the flywheel.
Tighten the right bolt that holds the assembly (3) to the top of the cabinet for the flywheel.
Connect the connectors to the Field Coil Driver Board. Verify the labeling on each connector with the location of the connector.
Calibrate the Field Coil Driver. Refer to Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, RENR9988, "Flywheel Field Coil Current - Calibrate".
