Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Note: If the timing bolts cannot be installed in the camshaft, it may be necessary to loosen the rocker arm and the fuel injector adjustment screws. Then turn the camshaft.

Install timing bolts (3) in the camshafts.
Install timing pin (4) in the crankshaft.
Attach a suitable lifting device to camshaft drive gear (5) . The weight of camshaft drive gear (5) is approximately 40 kg (88 lb). Carefully lift the camshaft drive gear through the opening for the cover on the side of the rear housing. Carefully position the camshaft drive gear onto the camshaft.Note: The plate and the camshaft drive gear can be damaged if the bolts are tightened too soon.
Put plate (7) in position on camshaft drive gear (5) . Install bolts (6) . Tighten the bolts by hand.
Remove timing pin (4) from the crankshaft.
If only one camshaft drive gear was removed, the camshaft timing pin must be removed from the camshaft with the drive gear that was not removed before the engine is turned.
Remove both timing bolts (3) from the camshafts.
If the crankshaft is turned more than 20 degrees, interference between the pistons and the valves may occur.
Turn the flywheel in the opposite direction of normal rotation for a maximum of 20 degrees.
Turn the flywheel in the direction of normal engine rotation until the timing pin can be installed in the crankshaft. This procedure holds the backlash in the timing gears in the direction of the normal engine rotation.If you are not able to install the timing pin for the crankshaft, do not continue to turn the flywheel in the same direction. Repeat Steps 7 and 8 until you can install the timing pin.
Install the timing bolts for the camshafts and the timing pin for the crankshaft.
Tighten bolts (6) to a torque of 270 40 N m (200 30 lb ft).
Verify the correct camshaft timing. Refer to Testing And Adjusting, "Camshaft Timing".
Install timing bolts (3) for the camshafts in the storage locations.
Apply Tooling (A) to the threads of timing pin (4) for the crankshaft. Install the timing pin for the crankshaft in the storage location.

Install covers (2) on both sides of the rear housing.
If necessary, adjust the valve clearance and the fuel timing. Refer to Testing And Adjusting, "Valve Lash and Valve Bridge Adjustment" and Testing and Adjusting, "Fuel Injector Timing".
Install covers (1) onto the rear housing.
