Installation of new, and removal of old, piston pin bearings is now easier and faster, when the correct tools are used with the 5P8639 Press Group. Either an electrically operated, or a hand operated, hydraulic pump can be used with the press group. This instruction gives the procedure, and the tools needed, according to engine model for removal and installation of piston pin bearings for both standard and tapered type connecting rods. It must be remembered that in the procedure given here, the old bearing is removed and the new bearing is installed all in one movement of the press. Do this only if the connecting rod is not to be checked for straightness. If a connecting rod is to be checked for straightness, remove the old bearing, check the connecting rod for straightness, then install the new bearing with these same tools.5P8639 Press Group

See the chart for additional tools needed for use with the tool groups.When some connecting rods are installed on the press group, the connecting rod part number must be put in a specific position, for removal and/or installation of a piston pin bearing. Use the charts that follow for a quick reference for the correct position of the connecting rod part number, and the tools needed according to the engine model and type of connecting rod. For those connecting rods in the chart that do not have a specific position for the part number, the connecting rod can be installed on the press group with the part number in either the "up" or "down" position. 1. Install 5P8643 Post Assembly (1) on base plate (2) as shown, and fasten it in position with bolt (3). 2. To operate the press group from the right side, install legs (4) in holes (A), (B) and (C), then install plate (5) and nuts (6) as shown. 3. To operate the press group from the left side, install legs (4) in holes (B), (C) and (D), then install plate (5) and nuts (6) as shown. 4. Put lock ring (7) on 5P9725 Cylinder (8), then turn the threads of cylinder (8) into plate (5). Tighten the setscrew in lock ring (7).5.
