The Electronic Control Module (ECM) for the engine requires electrical power in order to operate the engine. Power is provided to the ECM through the engine start switch. A disruption in electrical power will result in engine shutdown.

Disconnect the fuel return line from tube (4) . This tube is also connected to the outlet port for the regulator housing.

Gauge Assembly
Install hose (2) on the gauge assembly to tube (4) . Connect the fuel return line to hose (1) on the gauge assembly.
Open valve (3) on the gauge assembly.

Use the hand priming pump in order to fill the engine fuel lines with fuel. Continue to prime the fuel line until air is not visible in the fuel.
Close valve (3) . This will block the line between the fuel regulator valve and the tank. When this line is blocked, pressure will build up and fuel will fill the injectors. Use the fuel priming pump in order to increase the system pressure to 206 to 275 kPa (30 to 40 psi). Wait for approximately two minutes.
When the engine starts, open valve quickly to prevent rapid fuel pressure increase.
Open valve (3) . Start the engine.Note: If the machine has a Caterpillar Prelubrication System, the procedures of the Prelubrication System will be performed before the engine will start. If the machine is equipped with the Electronic Monitoring System (EMS), a "P" will appear on the operator's display.Note: If the machine has the ether starting aid, an "E" will appear on the operator's EMS display. The "E" will be displayed until the machine starts.
Shut off the engine. Relieve the fuel system pressure and remove the gauge assembly and the valve assembly. Connect the fuel return line.
If the engine does not start after two or three attempts to crank the engine, repeat Step 3 through Step 6 .Reference: See Special Instruction, SEHS9586, "3500 Electronic Unit Injection (EUI) Fuel Priming Procedure" for the part numbers that are in the gauge assembly.
