preparatory step: a) remove differential1. Separate differential from transmission and place on repair stand. 2. Remove safety wire (1), carrier bearing adjusting ring retainers, and carrier bearing caps (2). 3. Attach hoist and remove ring gear and differential from carrier assembly. 4. Place differential on blocks, ring gear teeth up, and remove carrier bearing using tool (A). 5. Turn differential over, install tool (B), and remove remaining carrier bearing. 6. Mark position of ring gear and remove ring gear retaining bolts. 7. Install four 3/4"-16NF forcing bolts and separate ring gear from carrier. 8. Attach hoist and remove differential assembly from ring gear-weight 325 lbs. (147 kg).9. Remove differential case safety wire and retaining bolts. 10. Separate differential case.11. Remove thrust washer and side gear. 12. Remove differential pinion gears as an assembly. 13. Remove gear and washers from shaft. 14. Remove remaining side gear and thrust washer from differential case. 15. Turn differential, input side up and remove pinion bearing cage. Use two 1/2"-13NC forcing screws.16. Remove seal from bearing cage. 17. Remove outer bearing race from cap using tool (C). 18. Remove pinion assembly. Drive pinion bearing outer race from carrier. 19. Remove large pinion bearing using tool (D). Remove smaller bearing only if bearing replacement is necessary. Cut bearing from pinion.Assemble Differential
1. Chill and install pinion bearing race in carrier. 2. Chill and install pinion bearing race in bearing cage.3. Heat pinion bearings in oil to 275°F (135°C) and install on pinion. 4. Install pinion assembly in carrier and install bearing cage without seal. Shim as required to produce 20 5 lb. in. (29 6 cmkg). Turning resistance measured with tool (A). 5. Remove bearing cage and install pinion seal using tool (B). 6. Install bearing cage. 7. Install thrust washer and side gear in differential case. 8. Install differential pinion gears and thrust washers on spider. 9. Install pinions into differential case. Notches in thrust washers must align with locating pins. 10. Place remaining side gear on differential. 11. Grease side gear thrust washer and install in case. Locating notches (3) must align with pins. 12. Install remaining half of case and tighten nuts to 280 20 lb. ft. (38,7 2,8 mkg). Secure nuts with safetywire. When installing a new ring gear, you may have to align bore with the locating holes and install over-size locating dowels. Be sure to follow the instructions provided with the new ring gear and dowels. 13. Install ring gear and tighten bolts to 265 35 lb. ft. (36,6 4,8 mkg).14. Heat carrier bearings in oil to 275°F (135°C) and install on differential. 15. Place differential and carrier bearing retainers on carrier assembly. Carrier bearing outer races must be in retainers. Carrier bearing preload adjusting rings must be backed out generously. Holes in retaining rings must align with locating pins in caps.16. Install caps and tighten nuts to 800 100 lb. ft. (110,6 13,8 mkg).17. Position assembled differential with axle center
