Check Of Repair Materials
1 Do not use Chem Gum Rubber that has changed from a black to a gray or purple color. Careful examination is necessary.2 Do not use Patch Fast Cement if it is too thick for easy application.3 Do not use Vulcanizing Fluid if it becomes too thick to put on with the applicator brush.See Page 12 for a list of the tools and equipment needed, and the sources of supply.Preparation For Sidewall Repair
1 To check the tire for possible air leakage, use a brush to put RuGLYDE, or similar rubber lubricant into the cut. If there is leakage of air, or if the cables are damaged, see a Beadless Tire repairman. If there is no leakage or cable damage, move the vehicle until the cut is in the upper half of the tire at a height where it is easy to make the repair.
Put the vehicle on blocks. Discharge the tire to 30 psi before any repair work is started. Injury to the service man is possible if a hole is made in the tire by accident, when the tire is at normal air pressure. Always use a face shield for protection when tools are used with the electric drill in preparation for repairs.
2 Clean an area about 4" (101.6) in all directions from cut (1) with wire brush (2) in an electric drill.3 Use carbide star wheel (3) to remove cut (1).
Do not use a drill speed high enough to burn the rubber; do not use the carbide star wheel near the cables.
4 If any of the cables show, clean them with wire brush (2), until all of the foreign material is removed. Make a smooth radius on all repair areas with carbide star wheel (3). 5 Put a large quantity of Cleaner Buffer Fluid on a Micro-Wipe paper towel or lint free tissue (4) and clean the repair area; let the surface become dry in the air for five to ten minutes. Do not use the heat gun.
This fluid is highly flammable.
6 If any cables show, put vent cord over the cables. If the cables do not show, make the repair without the vent cord.Repair Of Sidewall Cuts
1 Put Patch Fast Cement (1) on all repair areas.2 Cut lengths from vent cord (2) long enough to go over the area where cables can be seen. 3 To prevent contamination, use forceps (3) to push strands (2) of vent cord against the tire and over each cable. To hold the strands in place, put tape over the ends of the vent cords. 4 Let the Patch Fast Cement become dry in the air for twenty-five minutes, or use heat gun (4) for ten to fifteen minutes, about 5" (127) from the repair area.5 Cut pieces of Chem Gum Rubber (5) longer and wider than the repair area. Do not let the hands come in contact with the rubber surface. 6 Put vulcanizing fluid (6) on the repair area, over the vent cords in
