The CID 590 diagnostic code is associated with the Engine ECM. The FMI 14 diagnostic code is recorded when the Implement ECM does not receive expected operating parameters from the Engine ECM at the proper rate.The possible causes of this diagnostic code are listed below:
The Engine ECM has the wrong software.
The Implement ECM has the wrong software.Note: Ensure that the diagnostic code is active before performing this procedure. Check the engine system for correct operation before performing this procedure.Test Step 1. CHECK THE ENGINE ECM AND THE IMPLEMENT ECM FOR PROPER SOFTWARE VERSIONS
Use Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET) in order to verify that the versions of software are compatible. Note: Consult your Caterpillar Dealer for the correct part numbers of the flash software.Expected Result:The proper versions of software are installed on the Implement ECM and the Engine ECM.Results:
OK - The versions of software are compatible. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NOT OK - The proper software is not installed.Repair: Flash the proper software to the appropriate ECM. Cycle the key start switch in order to initialize the new software.STOPTest Step 2. RECHECK FOR DIAGNOSTIC CODES
Ensure that the CID 590 FMI 14 diagnostic code is active. Expected Result:The CID 590 FMI 14 diagnostic code is inactive. The diagnostic code indicator is inactive.Results:
OK - The CID 590 FMI 14 diagnostic code is inactive. The diagnostic code indicator is inactive.Repair: Clear the diagnostic code.STOP
NOT OK - The CID 590 FMI 14 diagnostic code is active.Repair: Ensure that the proper software is installed before replacing the ECM. If the software is correct, the Implement ECM may have failed. The failed condition of the ECM is unlikely. Exit this procedure. Perform this procedure again. Prior to replacing an ECM, always contact your dealership for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may greatly reduce repair time. If the ECM requires replacement, refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".STOP
