Engine Shutdown Functions
Engine shutdown systems are set at a more critical operating temperature, pressure, level or speed than the alarm components to protect the engine from damage. When any of these components shut the engine down, the problem causing the shutdown must be corrected before attempting to restart the engine. The systems may be electrically, mechanically or hydraulically operated.Engine overspeed will trigger both air and fuel shutdown outputs. All others trigger the fuel shutdown only.Familiarize yourself with the types and locations of shutdown controls. The shutoff control may require resetting before the engine will start. The shutdown controls should be tested every 1000 service hours by authorized personnel.
Never use the Emergency Shutdown controls for a normal stopping procedure.
When an engine shutdown occurs, one of the modules will display "ES" (Engine Shutdown). The cursor for the function which caused the shutdown is also displayed. The display alternates between "ES" and the value of the function (which caused shutdown) or the highest priority alarmed function. The engine shutdown display resets automatically when a failed function has been acknowledged and the engine rpm has reached zero. The shutdown system on your engine may contain some or all of the following shutdown components. Overspeed ShutdownThis electrical shutoff is set at 110 - 120% (adjustable) of rated speed. High Outlet Jacket Water Temperature ShutdownThis shutdown is part of the optional engine protection system and is set according to the setpoint in Reference Chart 2. High Inlet Aftercooler Water Temperature ShutdownThis shutdown is part of the optional engine protection system and is set according to the setpoint in Reference Chart 2. High Oil Temperature ShutdownThis shutdown is part of the optional engine protection system and is set according to the setpoint in Reference Chart 2. High Crankcase PressureRapid changes in oil pressure is used as an indicator of piston, ring and liner problems. Typical pressure readings should be -1.0 kPa (-4.0 inch H2O) minimum to 1.0 kPa (4.0 inch H2O) maximum. The crankcase pressure shutdown is set according to the setpoint in Reference Chart 2. Low Oil Pressure ShutdownThe oil pressure switch senses oil pressure at the bearing oil gallery. The shutdown is set according to the setpoint in Reference Chart 2.
