The Hydrax system on these engines uses an electronically controlled hydraulic actuator to modulate the choke plate, the wastegate, and the fuel valve. The shaft of the actuator is currently protected with a 2 piece guard. The guard protects the shaft from direct contact with large heavy objects. However, the gap between the guards allows paint, air borne sand particles, weld spatter, or other contaminants to contact and adhere to the shaft. This type of debris may cause damage to the actuator hydraulic seal during operation of the actuator shaft.Solution:
Gas compression applications generally repaint the entire engine package prior to customer delivery. Engines in these applications are often exposed to air borne debris and weld splatter. Generator set applications usually do not get repainted and are protected inside a building.In order to provide immediate additional protection for the actuator shaft, Caterpillar recommends that a 114-9269 Sleeve and two 9R-6247 Tie Straps be installed until a production fix can be put in place.The new sleeve should be secured in place while the actuator is mounted to its engine support bracket. Remove the actuator guards, linkage, and position indicator plate. Then slide the 114-9269 Sleeve over the shaft. Stretch one end of the sleeve over the actuator nut and secure this end with one of the 9R-6247 Tie Straps. Secure the linkage end of the sleeve just below the indicator plate (over the shaft end flats) with the other 9R-6247 Tie Strap.
