( 1 ) The hose assembly is not needed for harvester heads that are equipped with Caterpillar pressure taps.
Personal injury or death can result from escaping fluid under pressure.Escaping fluid under pressure, even a very small pin-hole size leak, can penetrate body tissue and cause serious injury and possible death. If fluid is injected into your skin, it must be treated immediately by a doctor familiar with this type of injury.Always use a board or cardboard when checking for a leak.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Prepare the machine for testing and adjusting.Reference: Testing and Adjusting, "Preparation for Troubleshooting"
Ensure that the hydraulic oil in the system is at normal operating temperature. To warm the hydraulic oil, operate the feed rollers for several minutes.

Place the harvester head in the HORIZONTAL position.
Shut off the engine.
Open the cover on the harvester head.

Main Valve
If necessary, attach the adapter to the pressure tap (PM) that is located on the main valve. Attach the 198-4240 Digital Pressure Indicator to the pressure tap or the adapter. Set the pressure indicator to the "PSI" setting.Note: The pressure tap is clearly marked on the main valve.
Start the engine. Press the operating mode switch in order to activate the working mode (wheel harvesters). Turn the engine speed dial until the engine is operating at 1300 rpm. Make sure that the switch for the controller is in the ON position.
Do not operate an implement. Read the pressure indicator. The pressure from the machine should be at standby pressure.
Raise the harvester head approximately 0.6 m (2 ft) above the ground.
Operate the feed roller arms. Read the pressure indicator. The pressure should increase from the machine.
Operate the feed rollers. Read the pressure indicator. The machine should be sending high pressure to the harvester head.
If the pressure did not change or the pressure was low, check the control valve on the machine.Reference: Refer to the Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, "Pressure Reducing Valve (Harvester Head) - Check and Adjust" for the machine that is being serviced.
Lower the harvester head to the ground.
Shut off the engine.
Remove the pressure indicator and the hose.
Close and latch the cover.
