Stopping The Engine
Stopping the engine immediately after it has been working under load, can result in overheating and accelerated wear of the engine components.If the engine has been operating at highway speeds and/or high loads, run the engine at low idle for at least three minutes in order to reduce and stabilize internal engine temperature before stopping the engine.
Avoiding hot engine shutdowns will maximize turbocharger shaft and bearing life.Ensure that the shutoff procedure is understood. Refer to the OEM truck manufacturer's instructions for your type of engine shutoff system used.Manual Fuel Shutoff Lever (If Equipped)
If the solenoid has been disabled, the engine cannot be shut "OFF" from inside the cab. The engine can be shut "OFF" by using the Manual Shutoff Lever on the side of the fuel injection pump as an emergency shutoff lever.
A manual shutoff lever is provided to shut "OFF" the fuel from the injection pump and override the governor control. The manual shutoff solenoid override lever is located on the side of the fuel pump.The engine can be shut "OFF" by rotating and holding the manual shutoff lever in the clockwise (CW) direction. Hold the manual shutoff lever in the clockwise (CW) direction to override the shutoff solenoid. The lever is spring loaded and will return to the neutral position when released.This shutdown will only move the fuel control linkage (rack) to the "FUEL-OFF" position. If freezing temperatures are expected, allow the engine jacket water system to cool; then check the coolant for proper antifreeze protection. The engine must be protected against freezing to the lowest expected outside temperature. Add permanent-type antifreeze if required.
