Lubrication System
Lubricant Recommendations
Due to significant variations in the quality and in the performance of commercially available oils, Caterpillar makes the following recommendations:
Cat NGEO (Natural Gas Engine Oil)
Cat NGEO EL350The proper SAE viscosity grade of oil is determined by the minimum ambient temperature during cold engine start-up, and the maximum ambient temperature during engine operation. To determine the oil viscosity that is required for starting a cold soaked engine, refer to the minimum temperature in Table 1. To select the oil viscosity for operation at the highest anticipated ambient temperature, refer to the maximum temperature in the Table. Use the highest oil viscosity that is available in order to meet the required temperature during start-up.
Table 1
Engine Oil Viscosity
Cat NGEO
Grade of Viscosity Ambient Temperature
Minimum Maximum
SAE 30(1) 0 °C (32 °F) 40 °C (104 °F)
SAE 40(1) 5 °C (41 °F) 50 °C (122 °F)
(1) Cat NGEO is available in these grades only. Multigrade oils are NOT recommended for use in Caterpillar Gas Engines. If other grades of viscosity are selected, ensure that the oil meets the requirements for Caterpillar Gas Engines. For further information about oils, see Special Publication, SEBU6400, "Caterpillar Gas Engine Lubricant, Fuel, and Coolant Recommendations".Lubricant Capacities
The capacity of the engine crankcase includes the capacity of the oil filters that are installed at the factory.

G3520B 541 141 Hydraulic Oil
Caterpillar HYDO (Hydraulic Oil) is recommended in most hydraulic systems. If Caterpillar oils cannot be used, the following commercial classifications can be used in hydraulic systems:
CH-4 engine oils that have a minimum zinc additive of 0.09 percent (900 ppm)
CG-4 engine oils that have a minimum zinc additive of 0.09 percent (900 ppm)
CF-4 engine oils that have a minimum zinc additive of 0.09 percent (900 ppm)
CF engine oils that have a minimum zinc additive of 0.09 percent (900 ppm)Note: Industrial hydraulic oils are not recommended for service fill in Caterpillar hydraulic systems. For further information on choosing a hydraulic oil, see Special Publication, SEBU6400, "Caterpillar Gas Engine Lubricant, Fuel and Coolant Recommendations".Biodegradable Hydraulic Oil
Caterpillar HEES (Biodegradable Hydraulic Oil) is available for use in hydraulic systems. This fluid is recommended for the hydraulic systems when environmental compliance is required or desired. This fluid is formulated with the following components: a saturated HEES (Hydraulic Environmental Ester Synthetic), synthetic base stock and selected additives.Note: Use this oil only in hydraulic systems. If Caterpillar HEES is not used, commercial oils that meet the Caterpillar BF-1 specifications may be used.
Do not use Caterpillar HEES or commercial oils that meet the BF-1 specification in compartments containing friction material. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual or contact your local Caterpillar dealer for guidance before using Caterpillar Biodegradable Hydraulic Oil (HEES) or commercial oils that meet the BF-1 specification.

Caterpillar gas engines will operate successfully on a broad range of gaseous fuels. Pipeline natural gas has been used for many years.
