Foreword
Use the information in the front sections of this publication for all information relating to Safety, General Information, Operation, General Torque Specifications, Scheduled Oil Sampling (S O S), Engine Specifications, Lubricant, Cooling System and Fuel Specifications, and Maintenance. All information contained in this section pertains only to engines manufactured prior to December 1986 and to all remanufactured engines.Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities
Lubricant Viscosities
Refill Capacities
The Chart below is to be used for all 3208 Truck Engines built prior to December of 1986 and all Remanufactured Engines. The refill capacities reflect the crankcase capacity plus filter. Auxiliary oil filter systems will require additional oil. For all auxiliary oil filter system information consult the OEM or auxiliary oil filter system manufacturer.* The recommended Refill Capacities of non-turbocharged engines were reduced by 2 U.S. quarts (1.9 L) in 1986. Turbocharged engine capacities did not change. The chart below shows the NEW recommended capacities.New FULL RANGE dipsticks (oil level gauges) will provide accurate readings for these new capacities. They are available for use with the earlier engines, if desired. Consult your Caterpillar dealer. For remanufactured engines, use the Reference Serial No. (REF. SER. NO.) to determine the crankcase refill capacity. Oil and Filter Change Interval
Mileage (km)
Mileage and Kilometer Conversion
Due to different engine applications, oil and filter change intervals are refered to as service hours in the Maintenance Management Schedule. If you wish to use miles (kilometers) as an indicator, divide the number of miles (km) driven per week or month by the total number of hours the engine is operated per week or month. This answer will give the average miles per hour (mph) [kilometers per hour (km/h)] the truck is operated. Example: To use the Mileage (Kilometers) chart, use the mph (km/h) figure and the correct service hour change interval from the SERVICE HOURS chart to determine the approximate mileage (kilometers) for engine oil and filter change. Service Hours of Operation
For more information on extending oil drain intervals, see your Caterpillar dealer.Low Emission System (If Equipped)
Naturally Aspirated Engines equipped with Low Emission System (L.E.S.) exhaust gas recirculation. (L.E.S. no longer used beginning with 1985 engines).Clean (L.E.S.)
Visually check the low emission system for correct operation at each oil change (PM Level 1).Engine Stopped
With the engine stopped, lever (1) on valve (2) should be in the UP position, slightly above horizontal, as shown.Engine Running At Idle
1. With the engine started and running at LOW IDLE speed, lever (1) should be in the DOWN position, below horizontal, as shown.2. If lever (1) does not move to the DOWN position, have the low emission system tested and repaired. For testing and adjusting, refer to the "Low Emission System" Section in the Service Manual, Form SEBR0514.The Caterpillar 6V3060 System Tester has been designed to test (troubleshoot) the low emission system for correct operation. See Special Instruction, Form SEHS7808, for instruction on the use of the tester.
